The Lake House

Black Mountains & Brecon Beacons
The Lake House, as its name suggests has the most enormous lake in its grounds! So whether you want to bring your fishing rod, swimming cossie or just watch from afar it's a beautiful and unique feature of this wonderful holiday home.

Old slate tiles, warming ancient oak woodwork throughout and cosy Welsh blankets are key features of this great house. It can work well as a large family let, a rental with friends or a split generation holiday as there is a self contained flat upstairs, with a separate fully fitted kitchen and daybed (which could also make the house sleep 11 people if needed).

There is a fabulous kitchen downstairs with all the gadgets you need to make your holiday really enjoyable. It's large and open plan, so you can enjoy chatting to your nearest and dearest whilst rustling up some morning pancakes on the gas hob or Aga.

The bedrooms are extremely comfortable, with views across either the lake, or the Black Mountains National Park. There is huge master bedroom, which has its own private stairs and ensuite bathroom. Three lovely doubles and a large twin bedroom, all with cosy Welsh blankets and the softest of pillows. There is also a daybed, should you need to squeeze in another person.

The owners have made sure that the lake is fully stocked with Carp, Breem and Perch, so do pack your fishing rod when you come and stay! There is also a canoe and boat, so you can really enjoy the unique benefit of having a lake with your holiday cottage!

Hay-on-Wye is just three miles away - a truly unique and fascinating town. Whether it's a bargain second hand book, or a rare first edition there is something for everyone, with specialist shops, a great deli and the world famous book festival each year. Or step out into the hills with the Black Mountains on your doorstep there is a walk for every level of fitness!
Quick checklist
  • SLEEPS 10 (+1): 5 large bedrooms in total. 1 large king-size master bedroom with en-suite, 3 further large double bedrooms, 1 twin bedroom, which can be converted into a double. Lovely bedlinen, storage and Welsh blankets in each room.
  • RELAXING: Fabulous large sitting room with a great Clearview wood burner, cosy sofas, enormous beanbag, great views of the garden through the huge oak windows, perfect for a day at home with your book....there's also a huge telly incase you get tired of that!
  • COOKING: This holiday home has a fabulous kitchen, which many of us would be glad to have at home! An oil fired Aga, gas hob and electric oven for the Aga phobic, microwave, fridge freezer. Lots of lovely pots, pans and Bridgewater china. All the kitchen basics such as oil, salt pepper etc. There is also a second fully equipped kitchen upstairs in a self contained flat which forms part of this property.
  • DINING: Fabulous old oak table with fun seating and linen cushions looking out over the enormous lake and grounds.
  • GADGETS: Large flatscreen television, Roberts radio, iPod dock, Wi-fi, sky television.
  • WORKING ON HOLIDAY: Bad luck, but if you need it, there is an office downstairs with wi-fi connectivity. There is also a decent work space in one of the upstairs bedrooms. Mobile reception is good.
  • BATHTIME: Downstairs cloakroom and laundry with washing machine and dryer. Upstairs ensuite, plus two additional bathrooms.
  • PLAYTIME: Inside: games room with piano, punch bag, table tennis, arcade game, table football. Outside: swings, lake for fishing or swimming, acres of ground, garden furniture, barbeque in summer months.
  • PETS: One well behaved doggie is very welcome in the downstairs kitchen and hall.
  • SMALL PRINT: As it's so beautiful inside, there is a £300 refundable damage bond for this property. The far side of the lake is shared by small canoe groups on occasion, although you are welcome to fish and boat on the lake at all times.
What to do within 15 minutes
  • WALK: Fantastic walks up the Capel y Ffin Mountain Road into the surrounding National Park are straight from the door. Wild ponies, sheep everywhere and some of the most spectacular views the country has to offer are all within easy reach.
  • MOUNTAIN BIKE: The stunning walks surrounding you are also fabulous mountain bike rides, with a route for every level. Bikes can be hired (and delivered!) from nearby Hay on Wye.
  • CANOE: Between April and October, the friendly team at the Wye Valley Canoe Centre, 5 mins down the road will help you explore the river. A great and novel way to arrive in Hay on Wye! There is also a canoe and fishing available at the house itself. Occasionally the local PGL centre may use the lake.
  • SOMETHING DIFFERENT: For the more adventurous the list is endless with rock climbing, abseiling, gorge walking, rafting, canoeing, archery, caving and pot holing etc. We have adventure training experts on hand to help you plan the ultimate adventure, simply ask when you book.
  • SOMETHING MORE SEDATE: Hay on Wye with numerous book shops, eateries and local stores, as well as the world famous Literary Festival is just three miles away. The Cathedral town of Hereford is also 25 miles away and Brecon can be reached in 20 minutes by car.
  • TOP TIP: The River Cafe in Glasbury is our favourite new find, just a short drive, or pleasant stroll down the brook from The Lake House, it serves the best latte we've sampled outside of Italy and the authentic Italian lunch and supper menu looks divine...ooohh and did we mention the beautiful river views and really lovely staff...fabulous!
