  • A quirky 16th Century cottage tucked away in the hillside
  • Enjoy the peace and quiet of this remote location
  • Surrounded by 580 acres of National Trust Common Land
Property code: 42961

We love uncovering new places, particularly new hills! The Begwns, as heralded by the National Trust as having all the view, none of the climb! With 580 acres of view, it's possible to see nearly all of the Brecon Beacons from the top of the common, a truly astounding view. Nestled away in the hills, just 5 miles from Hay on Wye, famous for its International Book Festival and a cycle ride away from Painscastle, with village pub and riding centre, this cottage is an idyllic slice of country life. Totally remote and wonderfully rural, friendly and welcoming owners living a discreet walk away, should you need any help or advice during your stay.

Stride down the grassy path and into an oasis of peace and quiet...well, apart from the chirpy birdsong,  You'll find, a little like in a fairy tale, an character-filled old stone cottage, hidden away out of sight in a remote location.  Lovingly restored, with heaps of style and wonderful vintage touches.  Step in through the porch, to the sitting room, with cheery wallpaper, large leather armchairs and wood burning stove, as well as a generous basket of logs awaiting. There is wi-fi as well as a flat screen tv and Blu-Ray player available too. The kitchen is simple, yet fully equipped, with a large walk in larder and dining table for four, it leads out to a sunny garden terrace, with a beautiful view of the hills, as well as a large garden.

Upstairs you will find two sweet cottage bedrooms, a large master bedroom, traditional iron bed, beautifully decorated with pretty views and lovely linen. The second bedroom is also for two, with a cleverly designed double bed built into the walls, making full use of the views.

It's incredibly romantic and wonderful for just two, and pets are most welcome too.  There are plenty of activities in the local area, with a pony trekking centre nearby, the friendly guides will lead you up over the Begwns on horseback for a morning ride or nip over to the other side of the hill and discover the canoe hire and adventure training centres, offering everything from a quick hour on the River Wye, to a Vespa ride up into the Black Mountains, bicycle hire to explore the Brecon Beacons National Park, or a test of nerve on the high wire ropes.  There are also great independant shops in Hay on Wye and a fine selection of pubs and restaurants for those who want to enjoy a gentler pace whilst on holiday in the hills!

A fabulous 16th century property which is quite challenging to get to but worth it if you enjoy splendid isolation. I didn't meet the owner but she was extremely helpful.

Hosts were very helpful and friendly. Ideal for those looking for seclusion and walks on doorstep. Access roads to the cottage are not for the faint hearted! What an amazing place, totally unique in location, design and style. Yiolanda and Jonathan are lovely easygoing hosts and they have carefully created this haven. The views surrounding the cottage are stunning and with no roads, the only sounds are sheep and kites. This house is perfect for those wanting an escape.
