Traditional stone cottage with hillside garden surrounded by ancient woodland and sheep fields, the perfect rural retreat located in Snowdonia National Park above the Mawddach Estuary with its renowned scenery and walks.

Discover the spectacular beauty of the Snowdonia National Park when you stay at this homely, three-bedroom cottage at Arthog, 6.5 miles from Dolgellau in North Wales. Up to three guests are welcome at the traditional Welsh cottage, which dates back to the 1600s. One happy hound can also join you for exhilarating walks beside the Mawddach Estuary and long, lazy afternoons in the delightful garden, with far-reaching views over the water.

Climb the footpath up the hill, carrying your luggage as you go, to reach this character-filled, stone hideaway. Let yourselves in to discover an open-plan lounge/kitchen/diner with a wealth of original features. Put the kettle on while you get settled then return to the kitchen area to make dinner and sit round the table together. Light the wood burner afterwards then relax on the comfortable seating in front of the TV or with a book. Take a few steps down from the kitchen to the family bathroom then climb the boat steps up to a single bedroom on the mezzanine level. Venture up to the first floor via the narrow, steep stairs to discover a king-size bedroom leading on to the other single bedroom. Because of the age of this cottage, some areas have limited headspace. Enjoy breakfast out in the garden on bright mornings and light the BBQ on warm evenings. There’s parking less than 100m from the property.

Follow footpaths from Arthog taking you past a number of pretty waterfalls. Pick up the Mawddach Trail from the village. This 9.5-mile route is suitable for walking and cycling and follows a disused railway track along the southern edge of the stunning estuary. Visit Dolgellau to browse in the shops and dine out. For a day out at the seaside try Fairbourne Beach, 2.5 miles away.

Fabulous old cottage in a perfect setting. Couldn't have wished for better. Cosy and well equipped. Just the right level of comfort without losing any of its rustic charm. Private setting with a lovely well-tended garden and panoramic views. Perfect location for exploring a wide sweep of Wales. We've ventured as far afield as Anglesey and LlangolleRead moren. Lots to do in the immediate vicinity. Three vists, and still haven't exhausted the possibilities. Train station a 20 min walk away. Hide

We had such a lovely stay at the cottage - beautiful views, idylic garden and wonderful wood burner to stay cosy inside. We visited local beaches, railways and especially loved the local Arthog waterfalls - a short walk directly from the cottage. Thank you for a lovely stay!

Ty Coch is a lovely old cottage in an unspoiled setting, with a glorious garden, and fine views across the estuary to the sea. There are steep but exhilarating walks through the ancient woods at the back, and easy walks down to the nature reserve and the estuary below. A peaceful and tranquil place. But the cost of that is the 100 yards climb up thRead moree path from the road (and therefore your car!). Don't go to Ty Coch if you can't manage that, but if you can it's so well worth the effort! Pretty cottage, nice homely touches in an outstanding location. The provisions of welsh butter, milk and cakes was a nice surprise. The spring water in the taps is gorgeous!

What a holiday. A great location to explore the amazing surroundings with our children. It was just the break we needed. The cottage itself was idyllic set in a private space with great views of the sea. Just magical.

This lovely cottage is approached via a steep 100 m or so pathway ( no vehicular access), but it is so worth it. The cottage was beautifully appointed, and had been cleaned to a really high standard. There are plenty of pots/pans/cutlery and kitchen gadgets ( along with a delightful welcome pack). The beds are comfy and the bathroom is spacious witRead moreh a bath and separate shower. The garden is well kept and you can sit out in the sun til late evening ( with a view of the sea). Recommended. Hide

Perfect setting and perfect cottage. Very well equipped and maintained. Friendly and helpful owners. Couldn't ask for more. Second visit and plan on returning. Can't imagine running out of things to see and do in this corner of Wales. I'd suggest bringing backpacks as we found it a lot easier to get provisions up to the cottage that way. The steep Read morepath is wonderful and part of the splendid seclusion, but it does mean that a bit of advance planning really pays off. Hide

The perfect place to relax and get away from city life. We felt so at home in this cosy, well equipped cottage. I most enjoyed sitting in the garden in the evening sunshine taking in the stunning view over the estuary and listening to the birdsong.

We had a lovely stay - thank you. Fantastic location, garden and view, and the (very) nearby beach is glorious and dog-friendly. Although we didnt take advantage of it, the folder of walks is amazing. Steps to the bedrooms are very steep, so this wouldnt suit someone with limited mobility. But its a wonderful house full of character.

Beautiful and quirky cottage with amazing views. The owners left so much useful information about walks etc which was great. You have to be relatively fit to get up to the cottage and also the steps to bedroom are very steep. Great stay.
