Brecon, a lovely location where the rivers Usk and Honddu meet, has plenty to offer curious visitors, with its Royal Welsh Regimental Museum, medieval cathedral and 1930s cinema (both 0.5 miles). While away a few hours admiring its Georgian architecture before popping into a local cafe for tea and Welsh cakes. The surrounding area has so much to explore, with gorgeous natural sites like Pen y Fan, South Wales’s highest peak, 3.5 miles away and the UNESCO Fforest Fawr Geopark 13 miles away. Keen to admire the scenery from a seated position? At Torpantau, board a steam train for a heritage ride on the Brecon Mountain Railway.
