A wonderfully quirky off grid barn in the very heart of the hills. Views for miles, walking & cycling trails for the very keenest including a great stroll to the country pub, this one of a kind eco-barn will leave you captivated.

Lovingly handcrafted, you’ll find a hand made, rustic wood fired sauna in the grounds to enjoy, a windmill gently whirring to provide your electricity, a natural spring for the water and a log burner to keep you toasty. There is central heating and satellite wi-fi too…even a telly & dvd, all cleverly fed from off grid sources.

The living is pared back and open plan, big comfy sofas to sink into, views from the french doors for miles across the Black Mountains. A piano, plenty of local reads and games stretch entertainment beyond the television and a farmhouse table for laid back suppers with those you love. A quirky layout finds the bedrooms above reached from the outside steps, so best for families with independent children and really great for couples looking for a get away from it all romantic retreat.

The master bedroom nestled at the top of the barn houses an iron framed double and sumptuous bedlinen, plus some of the best views across the valley. There’s a triple bedroom with three single beds perfect for children, plus a handy basin in the room too. Outside, it’s big skies and great adventures, the Brecon Beacons National Park is on the doorstep, market towns of Abergavenny and Crickhowell are home to country pubs, fabulous local food festivals and great independent stores, the time will fly by!

Dogs fees are charged per dog at £20.00 for up to 7 nights, £40.00 for up to 14 nights and an additional £20.00 for every week or part week thereafter.

MARKET TOWNS: Crickhowell, is just five minutes drive away with great independent shops, pubs and coffee shops. In the market town of Abergavenny, you will find a Norman Castle, farmers markets and the fabulous Food Festival each September. Brecon, Hay on Wye, Cardiff and Hereford are all in easy reach, as well as Wales Industrial Heritate sites in Blaenavon.

WALKING & CYCLING: The walking and cycling trails are second to none, with stunning trails up into the Black Mountains straight from the door and great adventures down by the mountain stream without getting into the car. There are good bike hire options available and delivery can be simply arranged with them.

POSH NOSH: The Brecon Beacons and Abergavenny have some exceptionally good restaurants, all within easy reach. Our top local picks are: The Hardwick, Abergavenny, The Walnut Tree Inn, The Foxhunter or The Nantyffin.

PUB GRUB: Four village pubs in easy reach! The Red Lion in Llanbedr can be walked to along quiet footpaths, The Crown at Pantygelli, The Dragons Head in Llangenny or The Bell at Glangrwyney all serve a decent meal and fair brew. Any one could be cycled to, depending on your energy levels, but all are within a short drive.

RIDING: The gentle rolling hills of Powys and Monmouthshire make for fantastic days in the saddle. Head over to the Llanthony Valley to spend a day in the saddle over at the Grange Trekking Centre.

SLEEPS 2 - 5: Two bedrooms, a double and a triple bedroom, both reached via external steps. A downstairs shower room with basin and loo, a further basin upstairs in the bedroom. Pretty bed linen and soft towels all provided.

RELAXING: Open plan living with farmhouse kitchen, farmhouse dining table, two large sofas, television, dvd, wi-fi, log burning stove, central heating.

OUTSIDE: Secluded terrace and garden, with exceptional views of the Black Mountains. There is also handy dry storage available for bikes and a private woodland and glade to explore.

SAUNA: There is a rustic, wood fired sauna available to use during your stay, with Hamman towels provided and a bracing outside shower to cool off.  it is shared usage with the lovely Blackthorn Cottage which further up the same hillside, out of sight.

GO GREEN: Ingenious as an eco retreat is, excessive water usage does have to considered, so please ensure you’re thoughtful about turning off taps during your stay.

CHILDREN: Will love it here, although it is best for independent children due to the external steps. There is a cot and highchair available on request.  Regret no washing machine.

PETS: Two well behaved dogs are really welcome, paws off the furniture please

WHAT OUR GUESTS SAY

Gillian, 5th October 2018

Absolutely wonderful place! Spotlessly clean, comfortable, plenty of equipment for all your cooking needs! A home from home. Location was superb with so many walks from the doorstep. Garden was secluded and secure which was perfect for our two dogs who also loved this place! :)

Vicky, 10th September 2018

The place offers a return to the quietest most real part of oneself, a return to naturalness, on the edge of wilderness, far from the maddening modern crowd. Wake up before the sun has found its way over the mountain, either to curse or delight in the need to collect your own kindling to the soft sound of bleating sheep, odd twittering bird, snap oRead moref twig beneath woolly socked feet. I miss it as I miss home. Hide

Joy, 3rd September 2018

We had a lovely week at this cottage in late summer. It was very artistically decorated so if that sort of attention to interior design is important to you, you will be happy here. Having to go outside to access the upstairs bedrooms was made special too by the fairy lights that came on to light your way to bed. The large tree that overhung the outRead moreside stairs kept raindrops off. Waking in the morning and opening the bedroom door to see the green canopy of the tree was very special. Hide

Reena, 24th August 2018

Great location if you really want to get away. Peaceful & quite. The bedrooms are accessed via steps to the side of the property which means you have to go outside, but if you want something different and enjoy a bit of fresh air then Hillside Barn is a great place to say. The Barn itself is so cosy and has all the equipment and facilities a familyRead more would need. Theres also a sauna on site. We stayed with our 2 and 10 year old and had Friends visit us. The towels and bedding were great quality Hide
