The small village of Clearwell is peacefully tucked into the valley, though small the village has a bustling community and is well served offering three village inns and restaurants. Surrounded by countryside with well waymarked paths that will guide you through some breath taking scenery no matter what the time of year. Both the Forest of Dean and Wye valley are steeped in history with many medieval and market towns to explore, Ross on Wye, Monmouth, Tintern and Hay on Wye. And for a little more adventure outdoors there is canoeing and rock climbing at Symonds Yat, Mountain biking for all abilities throughout the Forest of Dean and for serious walking the Black Mountains just across the border.

Cross over the mill stream to the front door of this Grade II listed cottage, the small porch is just great to leave those muddy boots behind. Step on into the lounge/kitchen/diner simply brimming with character which has been cleverly mixed with its own eclectic style, the simple touches and vibrant colours will take your breath away. The lounge area is welcoming with comfy sofas that are complemented with cushions and throws, and the wood burner is perfect for a chilly autumn evening. The bespoke kitchen is well-equipped with electric oven and hob, microwave and fridge. And for a simple supper there is a table for two within the open-plan area. A useful utility area with a washing machine is situated just off the kitchen.  When the day is done climb the stairs to the mezzanine bedroom within the eaves, this simple and spacious room is light and airy with a double bed and a further day bed well placed close to the open bannister overlooking the lounge just perfect to escape and enjoy a chapter of a good book, there is an en-suite shower room with WC.

Enjoy a breakfast within the small private gravelled courtyard, there is bicycle storage and parking for 2 cars.

Dogs are charged at £20 each per full or part week.

WALKING & CYCLING: The position of this humble little abode makes it ideal for outdoor sports of all types; nuzzled between the Wye Valley and Forest of Dean, and just across the Welsh border and the Brecon Beacons, you’ll be surrounded by a plethora of walking and cycling options in some areas of true striking beauty. With so much for adrenaline junkies too, including canoeing, rock climbing and mountain biking, you’re guaranteed a fantastic active holiday when staying here.

CASTLES & CULTURE: There are an abundance of castles all within a short drive of the cottage, providing you with plenty of opportunities to indulge in a little cultural wonderment. Ranging in age, grandeur and state, you can travel to discover the castles of Goodrich, Raglan and Abergavenny from your holiday home, or head to Tintern Abbey to see a truly special monastic ruin. Gloucester Cathedral is also just a short journey east, with lots of history to uncover.

TOUR THE TOWNS: With so many idyllic little villages to explore both in England and across the border in Wales, you’ll want to see every single one during your stay! Clearwell itself boasts a small yet mighty spirit, so you’ll feel right at home spending your holiday on its fringes. Gloucester has an abundance of facilities to discover, with everything from shops and restaurants to its magnificent cathedral and plethora of leisure amenities. Across the border in Wales, Monmouth is a classic Welsh town with plenty of history to offer, whilst the lively Newport is also easily accessible.

FINE FAYRE: Within Clearwell itself there are two spectacular eateries to suit separate tastes and budgets. The Tudor Farmhouse Restaurant was once described by Tatler magazine as a ‘culinary oasis’ and it certainly deserves the title, with their ’20 Mile Menus’ all locally sourced providing the ultimate dining experience that is perfectly executed every time. Elsewhere, the Butchers Arms serves many a traditional pub meal with Sunday lunch, set menus, dinners for kids and hearty grills all waiting to be taste-tested by you!

SLEEPS: There is one bedroom with a double bed and additional day bed. Bed linen is provided for your stay.

RELAXING: Electric and Wi-Fi is included for your stay.

COOKING & DINING: There is an electrical oven and hob, microwave and fridge with ice compartment. The utility room houses a washing machine.

KEEPING CLEAN: There is one en-suite shower room with WC on the mezzanine floor. Towels are provided for your stay.

OUTSIDE: Outside there is a pretty courtyard garden with outdoor seating, and an idyllic stream. There is ample off-road parking available.

PETS: Two dogs are welcome at this property.

Perfect base to explore the Forest of Dean & Wye Valley. The cottage was cosey and has everything you need. Wouldn't hesitate to go back for a 2nd visit as we didn't see everything we wanted to. Dog also really enjoyed himself.

The cottage was well equipped and well set out. Location is gtreat for local walks and areas of interest. Just a shame local pubs closed in Clearwell due to COVID.

The cottage is really charming and the furnishings are lovely. The best thing is the situation by the brook - so lovely to hear it; very restful.

A beautiful, characterful stone-built cottage - perfect for 2 plus a dog. Wonderful to have a stream running through the garden which our dog just loved after a long walk. Comfortable, clean and quiet.

Hawthorn Cottage is very cosy & perfect for a couple & 2 dogs. The little patio area was beautiful with the brook, the dogs were straight in the stream after their walk everyday. Quaint cottage in a lovely country location ideal base for visiting the area. Choice of eateries in the village. The package should put this high on your list of options for two people.

Nice week away, cottage clean and tidy, lots of space . Shower nice but if you over 5foot 7 u will have to sit lucky me and husband are short. Lots of parking. . Log burner fantastic but logs are more value if buy from garden centre. Would stay again but in summer months

Hawthorn Cottage is lovely, the steam that runs right through the small garden makes for perfect sleeping. The garden though small is very well laid out with tables and chairs. There is No grass area for dogs, but there is a large play ground is right across the road, and is all enclosed, so the dog can run free. The Poo bin is right by the gate, sRead moreo easy clean up. We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday in this cottage. As mentioned in previous reviews, it is a bit dark downstairs if the sun isn't shining, but lovely and bright upstairs. Great base for visiting Symonds Yat and other areas around the Wye valley and in walking distance of 2/3 good pubs restaurants. Lovely and quiet too, just with the sound of the stRead moreream running alongside the property. There is small park very close by, so great for getting the dog out to first thing in the morning! The cottage is very comfortable and cosy and very well situated to get to all parts of the Forest of Dean. We had good weather and It was a joy to sit out in the enclosed garden beside the stream. The owners are very friendly and were very helpful when we had an invasion of flying ants due to the hot weather.

Pleasant and comfortable cottage. Interior is a little dark - not too bad if the weather is good but could be gloomy if the weather is inclement. Small, pleasant seating area outside by the brook.
