A romantic hideaway perfect for a honeymoon in the hills

From the moment you step through the door you're struck by the attention to detail, exposed beams, 14th Century castellated archway and flagstone floors, yet still with a home away from home feel. It really is a stunning combination of ancient and modern luxury, complete with a castle wall.

In a fabulous location, on the edge of a small village there is heaps on offer, from walking and cycling from the door for all levels of fitness to gentle browsing in book lined Hay-on-Wye and nearby Brecon. A top location for nipping between nearby Brecon, with Cathedral and gateway to the serious hills and Crickhowell, with lovely independent stores and great access to the gentler Black Mountains. The Brecon and Monmouth Canal with pretty tow path runs nearby and there are also two significant rivers in the area, The River Wye, with fishing and canoeing available and the River Usk, famed for its fishing, with permits available locally.

The accommodation offers ONE bedroom: super-king-size with iPod dock and walk in wet room en-suite with bath, shower and WC. Lounge/kitchen/diner: with woodburner (logs included), Smart TV, Blu-ray and french windows leading to the terrace and garden. Kitchen area, with electric oven and gas hob, microwave, dishwasher, washer/dryer, fridge, freezer and coffee machine. Outside: enclosed garden, outdoor furniture and BBQ, access to acres of private woodland and parkland. Amenities: ample parking. Enjoy a massage in the Treatment Studio.  Bed linen, towels, dressing gowns, slippers, electric, under floor heating, central heating and Wi-Fi included. Bike store facilities available on site. Regret no smoking. 2 dogs welcome, more by arrangement. Location: pub within walking distance. Arrival: 4pm

Dogs are charged at £20 each per full or part week.

THE LOCAL TIPPLE: The White Swan Inn is just a short stroll from the cottage, serving food every day (except Monday) and we're reliably informed that Tuesday is steak night! A few miles further afield, The Felin Fach is a great country pub with a free round of local drinks for all Sugar & Loaf guests when dining (simply book in advance to get the offer).

POSH NOSH: For a bit of culinary dazzle it's well worth booking a table at The Walnut Tree Inn, with a shiny Michelin star and a healthy waiting list for a Saturday table, it's worth reserving a seat or two directly after booking your cottage, if fine dining is your thing. The Hardwick in Abergavenny and The Foxhunter are also well worth a visit for a foodie getaway in the Welsh hills!

WALKS & WONDERINGS: Stroll or cycle along the Brecon & Monmouth Canal Tow Path, stride out into the Brecon Beacons and conquer Pen y Fan and Corn Du, in clear sight from the village. Or enjoy the spectacular waterfalls and reservoirs in easy reach, perfect for a picnic...Sugar & Loaf can even provide you with a hamper! There is something for every level of fitness, with bike hire available in Brecon and mountaineering shops in both Crickhowell and Brecon town centre to stock up on supplies.

GASPING FOR AIR: There is fell running for the very keen, the .local clubs (MDC and the Mynydd Ddu) have a program of races throughout the year to test yourself against. From a dash up the Sugar Loaf, to the Fan y Big Horseshoe (really it's called that)! Tough Mudder also has an annual event at the local country pile, The Glanusk Estate in Crickhowell which is for the seriously keen!

MARKET TOWNS & VINTAGE VILLAGES: Llanfrynach is a top location for nipping between nearby Brecon, with Cathedral, heavenly local ice cream and gateway to the serious hills, Crickhowell, cute independent stores and great access to the Black Mountains. Hay on Wye which book lovers will never leave and Abergavenny which is the top town for tea, with The Angel Hotel dishing up a fabulous afternoon tea from 3pm...booking recommended on a Sunday. Cardiff, home of Welsh rugby, the impressive Millenium Centre and the biggest John Lewis in the country, covering all interests is just 40 minute drive away.

SNOOZE IN A SPA: Peterstone Court, is a country hotel a few short miles away, with relaxing spa and treatment rooms, as well as a swimming pool available to spa guests.

A DAY ON THE RIVER: Two decent rivers nearby, The River Wye, with fishing and canoeing available. Our top spot is from the River Cafe in Glasbury, where a paddle into Hay on Wye and back is rewarded with a decent slice of chocolate cake at the end! Day permits for fishing on the River Usk are available from the Bridge Inn pub in Crickhowell.

SLEEPS 2 : Large super-king size bed, with en-suite bathroom, iPod dock and the softest of sheets and duvets.

BATHING: Fabulous en-suite bathroom, with bath tub and shower, large basin, loo, dressing gowns, slippers and soft and fluffy towels. Hairdryer available and luxury toileteries included.

RELAXING: Large sitting room with high ceilings, cosy sofas, wood burning stove, beautiful arched glass doors leading to the fully enclosed garden.

TECHY STUFF: Full central heating throughout, underfloor downstairs, Smart TV, Blu- Ray Player, Wi-Fi.

THE TREATMENT STUDIO: A dedicated Treatment Studio providing a wide range of restorative treatments to sample during your stay.  For more information, please contact the owner after booking.

Very clean, well equipped and decorated. Really excellent venue. Just a shame the pub has shut but they can't help that. Thoroughly recommended
