An open garage—useful for muddy boots—leads to the large, contemporary kitchen/diner with a country-style dresser and breakfast table. The airy lounge houses comfortable sofas and armchairs, with a more formal dining area and lovely garden views from large picture windows. Herefordshire is celebrated for its wonderful orchards, and you can sample the taste of home-produced cider and perry at Peterstow’s Broome Farm. There’s more local produce for sale at Ross-on-Wye’s twice-weekly markets, along with specialist shops and a ‘Made in Ross’ arts and crafts gallery within the 16th-century Market House. Much of bustling Ross is a conservation area; follow the heritage trail to see the town’s picturesque historic buildings. Drink in spectacular views of the valley from Symonds’s Yat (6 miles), and explore the ancient Forest of Dean, on foot or two wheels.
