  • Watch the boats breeze by — the Monmouthshire Canal sits just beside the cottage garden
  • Join the Taff Trail for an inspiring cycle ride into the Brecon Beacons
Property code: BN161

This sweet, traditional cottage sits in an enviable spot right next to a canal. Inside, explore characterful period rooms and outside, venture into the peaks of the Brecon Beacons for a family hike or a gentle stroll around the Talybont Reservoir.

Set on the banks of the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal**, in the heart of the Brecon Beacons National Park, this charming cottage makes a fantastic base for families and friends who love the great outdoors. The popular Taff Trail walking/cycling route passes just 1 mile from the cottage, and you’ll be perfectly placed to explore the region’s dramatic mountain ranges, including the iconic Pen y Fan (6.5 miles). After a day of adventure, return to your cosy cottage to toast your toes by the wood burner or sip a glass of wine in your canal-side cottage garden.

The traditional Welsh cottage is warm and inviting, with a roaring wood burner and a charming mix of contemporary and antique styles. Rustle up a tasty dish in the cute kitchen, to enjoy together around the window-side table, overlooking the surrounding hills. After dinner, curl up in one of the armchairs in the lounge to read a book in the glow of the wood burner. Cottage-style stairs lead upstairs, where you’ll find the three tastefully decorated bedrooms: a double, twin, and single. Outside, a cottage garden awaits with idyllic fruit trees and pretty planting. Across the low wall, the canal passes the cottage. Pour yourself a drink and find a quiet spot on the lawn to soak up a bit of Welsh sunshine as you watch the barges elegantly drift by.

Wander into the picturesque village of Talybont-on-Usk (1 mile) to meet the friendly Cymry community. Browse the cute arts and crafts boutiques, sample the local sweet treats in the welcoming cafes, or tuck into a hearty meal in one of the cosy pubs. For peace and tranquillity in abundance, journey to Talybont Reservoir (3 miles). Meander along its relaxing shores, before heading high above the water to investigate the mystical Blaen-y-Glyn waterfalls.

**Please Note: This cottage may not be suitable for families with young children due to the close proximity to the unguarded canal and any children in the group will need parental supervision at all times.

A lovely cottage in a fabulous location in walking distance of Talybont on Usk which had 2 lovely pubs and a good cafe and village store. Garden was lovely by the canal so we could watch the boats and walkers passing by. We cycled and walked in the area most days. A good size for 5 of us and I would definitely recommend.

One of the best cottages we've stayed in: excellent views and location right in the centre of the Brecon Beacons, well-stocked store conveniently down the road, well-maintained, comfortable beds, full of history (apparently as the name implies, it used to be a forge where farmers brought their horses to be shod!) with old photos of the cottage and Read morearea on the wall... It was about as close to perfect as you'd hope! It felt like the cottage owners really went above and beyond, so many thanks! Hide

Lovely cosy cottage in a great location. Clean and very well equipped. It was nice to watch the boats go past on the canal at the bottom of the garden. Lovely walks or cycles along the canal towpaths. A couple of the mattresses could do with being replaced, but this was a minor point.
