For a quiet break amidst rolling hills and glorious views, this gorgeous countryside cottage in Mid Wales serves as a tranquil haven for families and groups. It’s in a rural spot around 3 miles from the nearest pub, and 4 from Newton where you’ll find plenty more shops, restaurants and cafés. You’ll be excellently placed for hikes and cycle rids in the Cambrian Mountains (11.5 miles), which offers some of Wales’s most stunning mountainous landscapes.

This six-person property has a cosy lounge with a sofa, a Smart TV and an open fire – just the thing for warming you all up on chilly nights. In the generously sized kitchen-diner, prepare yummy meals and sit down to convivial meals at the dining table. This flows into a games room, with a pool table, darts and another TV, that younger guests will love spending time in. You’ll also have a handy office space downstairs, for if you need to deal with any business during your trip. Enjoy time on the patio in fine weather, perhaps having breakfast outside and admiring the countryside views as you form a rough plan for the day ahead.

Gregynog Hall (5.5 miles) has much to offer the curious visitor, with its historic house, Grade I listed gardens, nature reserve and courtyard café. Keen to get out into the wilderness? The Shropshire Hills AONB starts around 11.5 miles away, while Snowdonia National Park is a little further away (20 miles). Both offer mile upon mile of fabulous trekking and mountain biking trails.
