This historic, traditionally furnished holiday cottage in a remote setting within the Cambrian Mountains (Mid Wales) - translating from Welsh to ‘House on the Mountain’ - is a spectacular hideaway for couples or families who want to explore and stay in the heart of picturesque nature. As you approach the cottage, you’ll spot Pumlumon, the highest peak in the Cambrian Mountain range. Relish the peace and seclusion of your stay. If you can pull yourself away, don your hiking boots and explore the Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire mountains, or bring along your bikes for epic cycle trails. The pretty village of Tal-y-bont (8 miles) has the closest pubs and restaurants to your cottage for post-hike refreshments. Take a day trip to the vibrant seaside town of Aberystwyth (16 miles) to see boutique shops, a Michelin-starred restaurant, a beach and pier, and sites like the Castle and the National Library of Wales.

Drive up a scenic gravel track via a stream and river crossing to this remote home where every room is cosy, homely and traditional. Settle into the open-plan, ground-floor space, including the living room where leather sofas face the flickering wood burner and TV, making for snug nights. Behind the sofas, there’s a dining area with a traditional table to seat six where you can share family dinners with a side of mountain views. Cook in the rustic, ground-floor kitchen and save time for peaceful moments in the small, window-surrounded porch where two chairs allow guests to sit back and enjoy the breathtaking views. A bathroom featuring a shower over a bath completes the ground floor. Head upstairs to the first floor’s cosy bedrooms: a king-size and a twin, both with TVs and cushioned window seats overlooking the surrounding nature, and a bunk bedroom with a TV and mountain views. Lastly, there’s a handy first-floor shower room.

Make the most of those unrivalled mountain views from your enclosed patio and terrace that’s surrounded by nature in every direction. Fire up the BBQ and dine at the table, using the sun umbrella if you need to, as you soak up this tranquil setting. Due to the remoteness of the property, there’s no light pollution so prepare yourself for some excellent stargazing opportunities when night falls. Children should be supervised as there are lakes and rivers on the grounds surrounding the property.

Please note: The access road to the property is suitable for high clearance vehicles or 4x4s as there are both a stream and a river to cross. The owner can provide use of a 4x4 vehicle on request at a nominal charge for access to and from the property if this facility is required. At times the river can rise and be impassable so please be aware of this when bringing provisions.

Great cottage in a great location. Perfect to unwind for a week. Living off-grid and managing the batteries with solar power was easy once we got the hang of it. Became a bit of a compulsion by the end of the week, to see how little electric we could use! Recommend this place to everyone, proper 4x4 needed for crossing the river if it has raineRead mored heavily. Hide

A beautiful cottage in a stunning location, the owner was always available for any questions and being a lone female, checked in with me every day to see if there was anything I needed. Surprisingly the internet was exceptionally good and you can get a decent phone signal if you walk part way up the hill. It was well equipped and the welcome basketRead more was much appreciated. If you love isolation, this is the perfect place. Hide

Just what we wanted. Only problem, a rat living under an inspection chamber where cars are parked, ate through the rubber hose to my rear windscreen washer!!!
