Combine town and countryside at this period cottage in Hay-on-Wye, a vibrant Welsh market town with strong literary roots. Visit local bookshops and the local castle and relax with a cuppa in one of Hay’s many quirky cafes (all within 0.5 miles). Or, if the hills are calling, head out wonderful treks through the Brecon Beacons National Park. The house is a wonderful blend of old and new and with room for four, is wonderful for a family wishing to immerse themselves in culture and nature.

Inside this cosy cottage, you’ll notice plenty of original features like gorgeous dark wood ceiling beams and exposed stonework. The decor is cheerful and in homage to the town in which it stands, has a literary theme. In the evenings, relax with your fellow guests in the open-plan living area, a gorgeous space with quality wooden flooring and a wood burner for keeping cosy during the chillier months. A separate snug room contains an extensive library plus board games. In the recently refurbished kitchen, cook up yummy meals, perhaps using local produce picked up at Hay’s market (Thursdays). Outside, the sweet garden is a fantastic spot for al fresco meals using the wooden furniture provided. Being part of a terrace of cottages, the private enclosed garden area is accessed from the back door, via a set of steps and along the edge of the neighbours garden area.

There’s plenty to do nearby, with a wild swim spot just 0.5 miles away at the Warren, along with other water-based activities like kayaking, canoeing and paddleboarding on the River Wye. When it comes to hiking, there are two national trails passing through the town: the Offa’s Dyke Path and the Wye Valley Walk, so you won’t be short of options. The region is also wonderful for pony trekking, mountain biking and rock climbing.

Please take this as constructive criticism as with very little cost, this cottage could be a cracker !! 1) Please see above re traffic noise and desperate need for double glazing and new front door at front of cottage 2) A welcome pack/folder would be nice with details of local things to see/places to drink/eat 3) Hedge leading to rear gaRead morerden could do with trim but I appreciate that there may be other home owners who are equally responsible for the hedge. There are many positives with regards to the property: 1) Spotlessly clean 2) Great location on edge of town 3) Great size bathroom and bedrooms At present I would not return or recommend to friends as traffic noise is excessive due to really poor glazing and door at front of property. Im sure other guests have said same. Resolve the glazing issues and if have no hesitation in returning and recommending Hide

Location is perfect for a stay in Hay-on-Wye, especially with its lovely reading room. Be aware the traffic noise is considerable and there are some low ceilings. Response from HolidayCottages.co.uk ~Thank you for your feedback. We are glad you enjoyed your stay in the main. We are sorry to hear your stay was affected by the unexpected local road wRead moreorks outside of the cottage, which were unfortunately outside of our control. We have been advised that these works have been removed. We do hope you were still able to enjoy the cottage and the lovely town of Hay on Wye. Hide

The road is busy/noisy and traffic starts early. Excellent location for Hay on Wye which is a fascinating town, with dozens of bookshops, lovely market, great walking nearby on the river or on the Black Mountains etc. Good location for walking the dog, either at the Warren or in the field at the bottom of the big car park in the town.

My wife and I spent two lovely weeks here. The cottage is very conveniently located near the center of Hay-on-Wye, and near 'the Warren', a nice area by the riverside. Apart from the normal attractions of Hay, there are plenty of public footpaths all around. The cottage itself is very comfortable and homely (though the ceilings are a bit low, so veRead morery tall people will have to be careful). It had everything we needed; we slept very well. The owner was very helpful and easy to contact. Hide

Good size cottage, with well equipped kitchen. Nice ' snug room'. Very comfy beds and nice quality bedding. Plenty of hot water for showers. Great location for access to centre of Hay on Wye shops and places to eat/ drink. Suntrap garden area but needs some TLC. Unfortunately the cottage is right on the main road through which resulted in lots of vRead moreery loud traffic noise, meaning no lay-in past about 5.30am. Whilst this may be ok for some sadly for us it means we would not return here Hide
