Alternative New Year breaks in Wales

Sarah 22 October 2019

A lot of pressure can often be put on New Year’s Eve to be the biggest party of the year but sometimes, simply being with the people you love most is enough. We can’t think of anywhere we would rather spend new year than with our nearest and dearest in wonderful Wales. Whether you are seeking a quiet new year break in Wales just the two of you or an action-packed adventure holiday with the whole family, we have it covered.

A winter beach break in Wales

Who said beach breaks were just for summer? Swap swimsuits and flip flops for coats and walking boots and instead of picnics on the sand, take a flask of tea to warm you up on long walks. After exploring miles of empty sand, beachcombing with children and playing frisbee with canines, bundle into a cosy pub to warm up beside roaring fires with beautiful coastal views.

Wake up on New Year’s Day by the sea and start the year with the cool coastal air on your face. Choose from the vast beaches of Pembrokeshire, known for its particularly dog-friendly coast, or head to North Wales to explore that beautiful Llyn Peninsula or the unparalleled beauty of Anglesey. If you’re feeling brave enough, you could even join in the New Year’s Day swim on Saundersfoot beach!

Snowdonia adventure holiday

Craving action and adventure after over-indulging on Christmas treats? The unique and diverse landscape of Snowdonia is a playground for adventurers. Whatever kind of activity you enjoy or would like to try, from horse riding to abseiling, you can do it in Snowdonia National Park! There are numerous tour operators and activity centres to choose from who can arrange kayaking, white water rafting, cycling, trekking, coasteering, and so much more.

There are also some unique attractions like the fastest zip line in the world at Zip World, the world’s first inland surf lagoon at Surf Snowdonia and Bounce Below, an underground playground inside a former Victorian slate mine. There are so many activities to choose from that, no matter what you decide, your new year break is sure to be a memorable one.

A romantic break in the Brecon Beacons

Whether it’s just the two of you or a group of couples, it doesn’t get more romantic than the incredible landscapes of the Brecon Beacons. Affectionately known as ‘waterfall country’ the national park is home to many of these natural phenomena. To reach the tumbling waters, often hidden off-grid, it requires long walks deep into the Brecon Beacons. Read our guide to waterfalls in Wales!

The Brecon Beacons is also a Dark Sky Reserve, so when it is clear, the night sky can be truly magical. Take a couple of blankets and a bottle of fizz into the garden and count in the new year beneath a sky full of stars. Read our guide to exploring Wales’ night skies.

New Year is a great reason to treat yourself, and the added luxury of a hot tub is an indulgence that ticks that box. It adds a luxurious feel to your new year’s break and even on the coldest winter night, you can sink between the bubbles and gaze up at a starlit sky in comfort. Whether it’s a romantic break or a group holiday with friends and family, it’s the perfect place to reflect on the last 12 months as you wait for the chime of midnight.

Our collection of hot tub escapes features cosy off-grid boltholes, charming Welsh townhouses and large houses with lots of space. Many of the hot tubs are surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens and incredible views over emerald green hills.

Really big houses for New Year

Christmas is busy, and big families and groups of friends can find it difficult to find time to see each other, so this is the perfect opportunity to get everyone together in the days after! Our large houses are designed to cater for big groups and often for groups which are multi-generational, some with extra special features that make them the perfect party house. A popular feature for all age groups is a games room, often complete with pool table, table tennis and table football, and sometimes you will find a house with bedrooms especially dedicated to the children too. Cinema rooms are great for rainy days, and a hot tub is always a luxury to have! Aside from all the extra features, our really big houses have social living spaces where you can come together to count down to the brand new year at midnight.
