Each month we feature a local business in Wales with unique qualities. Whether that be keeping traditional artisan skills alive, helping the environment, simply being fabulous or all of the above, we think that they deserve a shout about.
This month's featured business is Hilltop Honey in Powys.
It all started back in 2011 when Managing Director Scott Davies began beekeeping as a hobby in his parents' back garden. He potted the product and gave it to his family and friends. Soon, word spread and local shops offered to sell it.
The business grew quickly and fast-forward to today, it is a successful enterprise that has moved to sparkling new premises, employs several people and stock many large supermarket chains and outlets, and all from their hive of activity based in Mid-Wales.
They still produce local honey on a small artisan scale from their own bees, but such is the demand for their sweet stuff, they now source much of their natural honey products from all around the world, in turn helping other small businesses to grow. For example, their latest product is the magical and health-boosting dark amber Manuka Honey from New Zealand. You can buy this directly from them or from branches of Tesco across the country.
Recipes and ideas
Hilltop Honey's website is beautiful with gorgeous recipes, gifts and a huge range of delicious and natural honey. Their company motto is 'there is so much more to honey' and the numerous tasty recipes on their website go way beyond a simple dollop in your morning porridge!
Adopt a bee
For a fabulous gift idea, why not adopt a bee? Don't worry, they won't receive a pet bee in the post! This is a lovely scheme to help boost the bee population and to find out other ways in which we can all help our bees flourish and thrive. This is a great idea for kids as the adoptee receives a goody bag that includes a seed booklet for a 'bee-friendly' garden.
The local area
Hilltop Honey do sell online, but we have a lovely collection of cottages in Mid-Wales, enabling you to visit the area yourself, have a buzz around the beautiful countryside and perhaps even buy a jar from one of the local shops. Tell them we sent you!
