Eco-friendly holidays for the sustainable traveller

Sarah P 05 October 2020

Now more than ever, we are taking notice of our carbon footprint. We are conscious of how power is generated, how we dispose of plastics and what our everyday items are made of. And along with these decisions, and the eco-swaps we are making in everyday life, we are paying more attention to luxuries in our lives such as holidays! Environmentally friendly holidays play a big part, and eco-friendly travel is a trend to get on board with. We have taken a look at our collection and handpicked five of our most eco-friendly holidays to help the eco-conscious plan their next green holiday in Wales.

Nantywen, Brecon – sleeps 6 + 2 dogs

A hydroelectric supply powers the electric.

Surrounded by beautiful rivers and towering mountains, this eco-retreat in Wales is perfect for walking groups, families, or couples. With its own hydroelectric supply, you can stay here in the knowledge that the property's power comes directly from the water in the surrounding mountains. With so many beautiful walks straight from the doorstep, you can easily enjoy a car-free day out too! Slightly further afield, you’ll find stunning walks along the Brecon & Monmouth Canal, pony trekking in the Black Mountains and, just 5 minutes down the lane, country pubs serving tasty local dishes.

Keep your food miles low and stock up on local produce in the pretty village of Crickhowell, located just 7 miles away.

Ty Bach, Hay-on-Wye - sleeps 2

A composting loo, firewood, rechargeable lamps and torches, and a wood-fired hot tub.

This gorgeous cottage is the epitome of eco retreats in Wales, offering a unique blend of understated luxury and modern eco-living. Located within 50 acres of grounds to explore – including the owner’s kitchen garden, it also allows access to the National Trust common land which leads you up over the Begwns. As well as a show-stopping outdoor bath for you to enjoy, the property also offers a wood-fired hot tub for ultimate relaxation. While you’ll feel totally off-grid, when the time does come to venture back into the real world the enchanting book-lovers' town of Hay-on-Wye is only 3 miles away, and a plethora of activities await on the River Wye and deep in the heart of the Brecon Beacons.

Without the distraction of the TV and internet, enjoy hobbies that involve little energy like reading, writing or drawing.

Great Escape Glamping, Hay-on-Wye – sleeps 6 + 2 dogs

Electricity is provided by solar panels and wind turbines.

This unique eco-glamping retreat offers an experience that families and groups of friends will treasure forever. Consisting of three huts with a wood-fired hot tub that is available to book, these eco-cabins are tucked away in the hills above Hay-on-Wye. Accessed via a short walk from the car (wheelbarrows are provided for luggage), it’s the perfect escape to reconnect with nature, from waking to the sounds of birdsong to cooking breakfast around the campfire. The perfect base for thrill-seekers, Black Mountain Activities is just a few miles away, offering adrenaline-fuelled activities such as gorge walking, kayaking and high-wire ropes.

Pistyll Bach, Capel Isaac – sleeps 8 + 1 dog

The river at the end of the garden offers a source of electricity, and the swimming pool is filtered organically.

This stunning eco-friendly holiday cottage offers unique accommodation in a secluded spot just 4 miles from the market town of Llandeilo. What we love about this property’s environmentally friendly features is the way that the swimming pool has been designed. Instead of filtering it with chemicals, it’s filtered organically by the plants that surround the pool. Not only that, but the stunning garden room is a natural hub of healthy indoor plants. If you can tear yourself away from this incredible eco-retreat, you’ll find yourself in a rich walking area with easy access to the nearby National Botanical Gardens of Wales.

Hidden away in the heart of the Brecon Beacons, this beautiful eco-friendly cottage is the perfect base for adventurers and those that strive to be kinder to the environment. With all of the cottage’s amenities taken care of by natural off-grid sources, you can stay in the comfort of knowing you’re doing your bit. Nearby adventures include pony trekking through the nearby Llanthony Valley, fishing on the River Usk, canoeing on the River Wye and zip wires over Llangorse Lake.
